When I was a kid, I bought a gorgeous Hereford calf from the farmer up the road. Her mother got an infection and was unable to nurse, so I bottle-fed her before school, after school and before bed. To her, I was “mom.”

As long as I had her, this cow would come to me as soon as she heard my voice, no matter where she was in the field when I called her. However, she completely ignored every other person in my family, to their extreme annoyance. If I wasn’t the one calling her, she wouldn’t even stop grazing long enough to lift her head in acknowledgment of anyone else, no matter how loudly or persistently they might call her.

In John 10, Jesus called Himself the Good Shepherd and noted, “When he (the shepherd) brings out his own sheep, he goes out before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers (John 10:4-5 emphasis mine.)”

Jesus made this statement in the context of religious leaders who were leading many people astray. There have always been, and will always be, people in positions of religious influence who will not actually be leading people toward the Savior. The good news is that we don’t have to be led astray by anyone! The Bible is our True North, no matter what we may be taught, we can always fall on scripture to see if it is true because that is the voice of our Good Shepherd.
