Have you ever wondered if God was paying attention to what was going on in your life? There you are, facing a financial crisis, an uphill battle with your kids, problems in your ministry, or a health situation that is literally life or death and though you pray and pray, you can’t see God working. Does He even care?

The disciples wondered the same thing as they battled a storm in a boat on the Sea of Galilee. While literally fighting for their very lives, they asked Jesus, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown? (Mark 4:38)”

The Israelites had a similar question after they had miraculously crossed the Red Sea only to find themselves wandering in a dry desert without food or water. They grumbled at Moses (and God), “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst (Exodus 17:3).”

Jesus answered His disciples by calming the storm (which, ironically, terrified them) and then asking, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

God is always active, but for the moments when we can’t see or feel Him, it helps to remind ourselves that God has never before left us stranded. He always comes through for us in some way. While we wait for Him to do so, our attitude matters.

I have issues with my eyes that may leave me blind one day. A miraculous intervention is my only hope. One of my daughters has prayed every night since she was three, “Jesus, thank you that you can heal mommy’s eyes.” She does not waste a moment wondering if He has the ability to heal my eyes or asking Him why He hasn’t healed them yet. She simply believes that He will take care of it.

That kind of faith is what God is looking for in us in the moments when we would otherwise panic. It’s a sign of spiritual maturity. It’s what people who are watching us notice- because it’s unnatural. This is; “the peace of God, which transcends all understanding,” and what guards our heart and mind in Christ Jesus (Phil. 4:7).
